CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents
about background of the study, research problem, objective of research,
significance of research, scope and limitation of the research, and definition
of key terms.
1.1 Background of the Study
English is the most
popular language in this world. Most of the people use this language for communicate with other people in the world. Although
different countries have different languages. Most people also need English to
share meaning between language and tourism, entertainment and so on.
In Indonesia English is
a foreign language. Thus, English becomes
one of the important Subjects taught in any level of education field in
Indonesia. It is starting from beginning level until highest level of education
in Indonesia.
Teaching
English includes four language skills: Listening,
Speaking, Reading, and Writing. From four
languages skills are taught integrated in the teaching learning process. Kraft
(1984) states “language skills are actually combination of the four language
skills” (in Hidayati, 2002)
Turner (1995; 2)
statement “listening is not acquired like speech through social interaction,
nor is it learned through formal instruction like reading and writing. It appears
to be something we can do right from birth humans has a pre-natal sensitivity
to sound and are able to hear from the moment of birth. Listening, however, is
not the same as hearing. Hearing is a physical process, taking in sound through
the ears. Listening involves mental processes. It seems to involve hearing
together with paying attention, understanding, interpreting. Listening and
understanding are not problematic, but things can go wrong. We might pay
attention but not understand. If the content of what we re listening to is
unfamiliar and unknown to us. We pay very close attention to what is being said
but may still be unable to understand but not interpret correctly. Someone’s
tone of voice or facial expression may mislead us or we may not have enough
background information at our disposal to get the speaker’s meaning right.
Successful listening therefore depends on hearing what is said and
understanding and interprets what is mean. Understanding what is mean often
going beyond the words used by the speaker”.
Sometimes many students
are still confused in comprehension sentence. New pronunciations and sounds for
the different words by native speakers. So that the teacher should be
responsible for these difficulties. In order to make the students with listening
classes.
Avoiding it
difficulties, teacher must get effective way, good materials, and appropriate
teaching media to make students have good listening skills. Students should
start listening to speech of native speaker by radio programs, songs, watching
TV, movie, and so on. Considering the students interest in entertainment,
teaching strategy by songs is an effective strategy for teaching English.
Through songs can improve their listening skills.
Teaching media is one
of important factor in teaching English especially in listening. Furthermore
songs become impressing choice in developing student listening skills. Based on
my experience, the problem were found on the teaching listening are some of
students have difficulty in listening comprehension
material,
this situation make students get bored, confuse with what the speaker’s say.
This situation influences the student’s score.
Based on, my
explanation above. The researcher needs to implement listening through songs to
solve the problem. And also the students will be interesting and enjoy in
listening class through songs.
