CHAPTER l
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents background
of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of
the study, scope and limitation of the study and definition of key terms.
1.1 Background of the study
English is the most common
language people use especially in this globalization era is very important for
people especially in communication aspects. As the English became the
compulsory subjects of the schools in every country, some people have many reasons
why they learn it. Some learn English for add their knowledge and improve their
language ability become more professional, but also some people don’t like to
learn it, in this case they have to accept it though they don’t expect this.
There are four branches in learning English, they are 1) Speaking, 2) Writing,
3) Reading, and 4) Listening. I know in learning foreign language is not that
easy to understand. That’s why teacher should choose the appropriate method for
their students. So that students will understand the English subjects with high
motivation.
From those 4 English skills, I
found mostly the difficulty especially for students in learning Speaking. They
have problem in expressing and responding something in English. Furthermore,
students also have no self confidence of their ideas, even just make simple
expression, because they are too afraid and shy to make mistakes. They do not
have enough knowledge about English vocabulary and pronunciations. This kind of
problem can be caused by the monotonous teaching method that teacher used and
less motivation that students got. And also the students probably less having
English speaking practice in their environment, and the effect of the mother
tongue so that sometimes they will get some mistake in pronouncing some words.
Hasanah said (in Muyasaroh
2007:5) , that the passiveness of the students was caused by internal and
external factors cover lack of motivation, lack of vocabulary, reluctant to
express the ideas, while factors cover unavailability of variation of teaching
methods, large class and uninteresting topic. From the condition above, the
researcher would like to make more interesting atmosphere in the class. So
that, the students will have good motivation to learn more.
Based on the explanation above,
I want to know how much Community Language Learning will improve the second
semester English Students of Unisma. By this method, teacher will be more
successful in teaching speaking and motivate students. So, that the low
confidence of the students will be increased and they can participate the
learning activity well.
1.2 Statement of the
Problem
Based on the background of the
study above, the researcher is interested in finding and answering the
following question:
“How can Community Language Learning
(CLL) improve students’ speaking skill in second semester at SMPN 18 MALANG”
1.3 The purpose of the Study
Based on the statement of the
problem above, the purpose of this study is to describe the use of Community
Language Learning (CLL) can improve the students’ speaking skill effectively in
second semester at the English Department of UNISMA.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The researcher expects that the result of this study will be useful for:
1. The English Teacher:
The information the teacher get can
be used to select the appropriate the technique in teaching speaking,
especially in SMPN 18 MALANG. It also inspires teachers to be more
creative to make interesting and enjoyable speaking class by using
Communicative Language Learning.
2. The readers:
The researcher hopes that the result of this study will inspire the readers and add the knowledge for the further writers
who are interested in investigating other aspects as learning process.
1.5. Scope and Limitation of
the Study
The English subjects are taught
in this semester involves: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Structure.
But in this study, it is limited on speaking subject. The researcher will use
the Community language Learning Method in teaching Speaking subject. The
teaching activity in English especially speaking is emphasized in making group
of discussion with the news people these days discuss, because it s very
interesting for the students to receive the lesson.
1.6 Definition of key term
To avoid the misunderstanding
the meaning, the writer explains the key term of the study:
1.
Improve :
Process of making the speaking skill of
UNISMA’s students at the second semester becomes better.
2. Speaking:
A process of express or giving the ideas or
feeling by using language. (Oxford: 2000)
3.
Communicative Language
Learning:
A method that teacher use to consider their
students as ‘whole persons’. Whole persons learning mean that teacher considers
not only their students’ intellect but also have some understanding of the
relationship among students’ feelings, physical reactions, instinctive
protective reactions, and desire to learn. (Diane: 2000)
